About Business Books - Black Business Secrets: 500 Tips, Strategies, and Resources for the African American Entrepreneur by Dante Lee

Although this book was published over a decade ago the opening chapter still speaks to circumstances currently being experienced in the US today. Dante Lee makes important points about the collective awareness of the country and how that awareness doesn’t necessarily translate into actual gains for African American entrepreneurs. Although the author points out the challenges faced by the African American community, they also reveal that success is not impossible. In chapter one the reader is introduced to the author, offered a perspective on what has been unfold in American economics, details of the historical and at times violent and socially devastating challenges the African American community has had to contend with, and a viable plan for achieving entrepreneurial success in spite of it all.Book Review by Melisa Y Bell

I appreciate the information provided in this chapter for a couple of reasons. The first reason being the fact that African American entrepreneurs need to be made aware of not only the hardships associated with being a business owner but that those hardships may be amplified simply because they are of African descent. This is important because beginning entrepreneurs with unrealistic expectations will have to weather potentially debilitating hits to their self-esteem and their motivation. Another reason I appreciate the first chapter is the history it contains. It presents historical facts on the inspiring achievements of black entrepreneurs, includes events that have negatively impacted the African American community, and highlights what is still being accomplished by African Americans though they may have faced undue hardship. In order to know where you’re going and how to get there you have to know where you’ve been, so you're equipped to travel the terrain ahead

In the latter part of the chapter Dante Lee provides the details of his background, his accolades and accomplishments, so the reader has a healthy respect for the value being offered to them by the author and in the book. I have to say for anyone who finds reading to be a chore to begin with presenting the author's experience and value up front is vital. Through communicating their intent for the book at the outset the author clearly outlines the opportunity being offered to the reader and leaves it to the reader to decide whether or not it aligns with their needs. The opportunity is compelling, and it is one I highly recommend engaging. By the end of the chapter, you have a solid idea of the valuable guidance awaiting you in the pages ahead. Book Review by Melisa Y Bell
